08.05.06 - CYCLISTS TACKLE ‘COAST TO COAST’ CHALLENGE

Four members of staff from Sleaford-based cultivation equipment manufacturer Simba International are hoping to raise £5,000 for Cancer Research by completing a “Coast to Coast” cycle ride over the weekend of Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th May.

Lincs Chain GangThe four, Colin Adams, Euan Adamson, Kevin Waddingham and Peter Mason, are part of the “Lincs Chain Gang” – a group of eight cyclists aiming to complete the 184 mile ride, which starts at St Bees, Whitehaven in Cumbria and finishes at Bridlington on the Yorkshire coast. Colleague Alan Davies will be one of the two back up drivers for the trip.

“We are really going coast to coast. We will start in the Irish Sea and finish in the North Sea, and camping overnight rather than staying in a hotel”, says Colin Adams.

“The route is a tough one, including going through the Lake District, over the Pennines and the North Yorkshire Moors, and while everyone else is having a relaxing Sunday morning, we will be tackling Sutton Bank, a one in four climb near Thirsk that is so steep you are not allowed to tow caravans up it.

“All of us have been training regularly since the New Year for this and for triathalons. Euan was very fit anyway as he is vice captain and plays centre for Sleaford Rugby Club, for which I also used to play, and Peter is a keen mountain biker.

“We have got around £1,400 sponsorship between us and are aiming to raise £2,000 as a quartet, with the whole team of ten – eight riders and two back-up drivers – aiming to raise £5,000 in total”.
